HEAT STROKE IN DOGS
 
With the promise of a long hot summer ahead we are no doubt going to see our share of heat stroke in dogs. It is a genuine emergency and needs rapid action  from
the owner as well as the veterinary surgeon
 
HEAT STROKE -  the body over heats and the normal  temperature and cooling mechanisms ie panting are over whelmed.  The Classic scenario is  the dog left in a hot car with no ventilation.
 
certain breeds and  medical conditions make many dogs more prone  to heat stroke
 
1  FLAT FACED DOG  WITH NARROW RESTRICTED AIRWAYS  Boxers, Staffordhire Bull Terriers,  Bull Dogs,Pugs, Shitzu etc
 
2 OBESE DOGS of any sort  with  restricted chest movements unable to pant properly
 
3 OLD DOGS with weakened airways and laryngeal paralysis - typically old labs and retrievers
 
4 MEDICAL PROBLEMS such as congestive heart disease and lung diseases
 
5 BLACK,DARK,AND  THICK COATED DOGS -  that absorb more heat
 
 
SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE
 
DISTRESSED AND EXCESSIVE PANTING
BLUE TONGUE AND  GUMS
VERY HOT TO THE TOUCH
COLLAPSE
DIARRHOEA
SEIZURES AND  DEATH
 
EMERGENCY TREATMENT
 
COOL THE DOG DOWN IMMEDIATELY
USE WATER SPRAY ,HOSE, SHOWER,COLD BLANKETS
REMOVE TO COOL VENTILATED AREA IMMEDIATELY
SEEK VETERINARY ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY
 
 PREVENTION AND PRECAUTIONS
 
                    DONT LEAVE DOGS IN HOT CARS EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN
 
                    KEEP YOUR DOG'S ROOMS AT HOME WELL VENTILATED AND SHADED
 
                    PROVIDE PLENTY OF DRINKING WATER
 
                    ALWAYS EXERCISE YOUR DOG IN THE EARLY MORNING OR EVENING
 
                    BE AWARE OF OLD AND OBESE DOGS -RESTRICT EXERCISE
 
                    BE EXTRA CAREFUL WITH FLAT FACED BREEDS 
 
                    MAKE SURE HEART  AND LUNG PROBLEMS ARE UNDER MEDICATION
                 
                    HAVE THICK COATED DOGS THINNED OUT FOR SUMMER
